Writings from the Wall
The collection of songs entitled ' Sacred Hearts' evolved after being introduced to Martin Barre the guitarist with Jethro Tull in 1987. Having met Martin he in turn introduced me to his own personal studio and his technician Mark Tucker. Martin then came over to my house in Taunton to hear four of my new songs I'd had been working on and having heard one of the songs entitled 'Sail away' decided that he would record one of the guitar parts on it.
It was during the recording session for 'Sail away' I got to know Mark Tucker an incredible guitarist in his own right yet with 'ability' in the studio as a mixing engineer. Mark soon arrived at my house brandishing some obscure good looking white guitar which in my view sounded like an amplified elastic band and promptly blew my JPW Speakers which powered my Hi- Fi demonstrating his big guitar sounds.
But a musical friendship between us had started and we found ourselves very quickly over at Martins home studio with an album full of material and a begging hat aimed at the greatest guitarist in the world with the fervent hope that he would grant us some free time in his studio and we would pay him back once we got famous!
To my astonishment Martin in his usual friendly unique way granted this request and Mark and I set about recording some initial tracks...
I quickly ascertained that Mark Tucker was not only developing as a producer but an incredible guitarist. I recall one session where Mark insisted that he needed a big guitar sound for a track we were working on entitled 'I can't Believe' and in order to achieve this he midied up almost half a dozen of Martins posh guitar Amps which were stored in a side room just off the studio.
This did not help the house shaking when Mark proceeded to record the guitars. Martin's wife Julie got rather alarmed at the noise being created by us and in her usual sweet way enquired if the racket was going to persist for too much longer! Martin himself missed the excitement as he was on tour in America with Tull at the time. The result achieved by Mark however was extraordinary.
Two songs from the 'Sacred Hearts' collection 'Arabic Woman' and' I can't Believe' were given an opportunity to be heard on one of Chile's first platforms for music to be promoted during the final stages of the Pinochet regime. These songs were very favourably received there and paved the way for other artists to travel to Chile in South America from different countries and perform their music.
