Valaszut 2012

From the moment I travelled to Budapest in order to work with Nikola Parov on imputing ethnic flute sounds into selected tracks for the 'Europe' album, Nick and I became close friends. And from then on, he and I have met up in Budapest on numerous occasions to spend time together, and record some exciting new music.

Nikola Parov is one of Hungary's most versatile, and talented musicians. He is best known for his 'River Dance' involvement, being one of the original River Dance orchestra members, which toured throughout the world back in the 80's.

Nikola has written some of Hungary's best dance musicals for the Hungarian State Ensemble, and currently enjoy's almost cult status in his solo endeavours. The 'Nikola Parov' band tour regularly in Europe.

It was during one of my visits there, I played Nick what was the beginning of a song I'd started called. 'You'll be you' Nik, in his usual way, picked up on this song, and while sat on his wonderful veranda, looking out over the beautiful valley, and eating grapes straight off the vine which hung over the doorway, we completed it.

'You'll be you' now sparked a desire for us both to record an album together, with the idea of fusing up various ethnic instruments' with the music.

With this in mind, I wrote a series of songs, which I felt would withstand an ethnic instrument influence within them, without sounding too out of place commercially. Nikola worked on these songs over a period of time, and between November 2011 and January 2012 I journeyed to Budapest and the cold winter, in order to work on the new album.

If you have journeyed to Budapest in the summer, and experienced the warm, undulating winds and beautiful sunshine which graces the landscape, then one is in for a big shock during the winter months, when temperatures' can plummet to minus 24- 25 or more. I was not prepared for this, and while walking back and forth up the long arduous uphill road to Nikola's mountain retreat set in the hills of Nagykovacsi, I literally froze! I grew used to the public transport system which, during the cold months was a 'god send' in which one could heat up before disembarking.and heading into the next cold onslaught.

We recorded some wonderful songs during this time, and began developing our own way of working together. Nikola is a no - nonsense musician who really feels the music he performs. It was a moving experience to observe him on occasions, inputting onto a track, though he prefers to work alone during this process. What has transpired from the recordings is an album we have called

'Valaszut, the Hungarian word for 'turning a corner'. It's an album where we have purposely stripped back all the production and returned, as we like to call it, 'to Basics!' We have tried to simplify the recording techniques and keep the music simple and sweet. The result is a very different sound, which has ended up exciting and unpredictable. Somehow we have stumbled upon a new avenue for our music, which is what neither of us expected.

'Valaszut' epitomises a journey to Hungary, the fusion of two cultures and a series of adventures set amidst the sunshine and the snow. We hope you enjoy this music and it gives you inspiration, as much as it inspired us when we were creating it…
